2。5 stars。 I am kinda disappointed by this book。 After seeing so many positive reviews for this book, I was really excited to delve into the strange quirky life of Keiko。 We are immediately intrigued by her character as we learn how she feels as though she doesn’t fit in with society but is an excellent worker at a local convenience store。 While I enjoyed the beginning of this well-written book, the relationships that Keiko has with the other characters made me really upset as they treated her s 2。5 stars。 I am kinda disappointed by this book。 After seeing so many positive reviews for this book, I was really excited to delve into the strange quirky life of Keiko。 We are immediately intrigued by her character as we learn how she feels as though she doesn’t fit in with society but is an excellent worker at a local convenience store。 While I enjoyed the beginning of this well-written book, the relationships that Keiko has with the other characters made me really upset as they treated her so poorly。 While I understand this treatment was for Keiko to realize what she really wanted in life, I felt as though it could have been portrayed better than it was。 I was so irritated by everyone towards the end of it。 Luckily though, I pushed myself to finish this book because of Keiko and how good the writing was。 I haven’t been this upset over a book in a while。 I wish there was just a little bit more to this story and I hope that Keiko finds better people to hang around。 。。。more

4/5 A fast and short read。 I listened to Convenience Store Woman in audiobook format and it was around 4 hours long。 In Convenience Store Woman we follow a woman named Keiko who has been working at the same convenience store for 18 years。 She is content with her life and finds pleasure and purpose working at the convenient store。 She is a bit of an outsider who's trying to find her place in the giant cog of society。 The story is quirky and a little absurd at times but it was quite a refreshing r 4/5 A fast and short read。 I listened to Convenience Store Woman in audiobook format and it was around 4 hours long。 In Convenience Store Woman we follow a woman named Keiko who has been working at the same convenience store for 18 years。 She is content with her life and finds pleasure and purpose working at the convenient store。 She is a bit of an outsider who's trying to find her place in the giant cog of society。 The story is quirky and a little absurd at times but it was quite a refreshing read。 I will be reading more by this author。What I liked: - MC is not neuro-typical- themes: challenging social norms 。。。more

I hesitate to write this for translations, without knowing how well it captures the spirit of the source text, but I was disappointed in this one。 This book is a straightforward glimpse into the life of an eccentric, possible autistic woman whose identity is based on her part time job at a convenience store。 The narration details her obsessiveness about tending to the store; she is equally as fastidious about tending to her personality and social skills, which she consciously tries to make as "n I hesitate to write this for translations, without knowing how well it captures the spirit of the source text, but I was disappointed in this one。 This book is a straightforward glimpse into the life of an eccentric, possible autistic woman whose identity is based on her part time job at a convenience store。 The narration details her obsessiveness about tending to the store; she is equally as fastidious about tending to her personality and social skills, which she consciously tries to make as "normal" as possible。 There is some commentary about capitalism, herd thinking, traditional hetero society and it's expectations on women; we never get much deeper because it doesn't seem like there is much else to this woman。 。。。more

The first half of this book was fantastic。 But then it fell off a bit。 It’s quirky and playful, but it feels like the author forgot that the protagonist has little understanding of how society worked when, half way through, she started socializing with someone and actually (somewhat) understanding him, and the world around her。

Convenience Store Woman is Sayaka Murata’s not-so-subtle ode to idiosyncrasy and individuality。 The story of a woman who just wants to do the thing she is meant to do – work at a convenience store。 And you know what? I am all for the lack of subtlety instead of hinting at individual foibles and not fitting in。 She took the issue by the throat and slammed it down in front of us。 PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE TO FIT YOUR IDEA OF NORMAL TO BE PEOPLE。 How is that for subtlety, eh? All caps。I don’t have much else to say。 The book is quite short, so I will stay true to form and keep my review short as well。 All I can say is that I appreciated it, because it allowed me to appreciate people in my past a bit more。 I used to work at a retail grocery store, and there are people from all walks of life within that “hierarchy” – it’s not as easy as saying someone who works there is lacking ambition。 I met one of my best friends at that store, and we moved through a few other jobs together。 I met a girlfriend there, and she is still a great friend of mine (and finishing up her master’s degree)。 But I also met people who (by their own admissions) lacked ambition。 I also met people who were dissatisfied, resentful of life。 And I even met a couple of characters almost exactly like Keiko Furukura, our main character。 Their life WAS the grocery store。 That was simply it。 Conversation revolved around nothing but stocking the shelves, sales, and their next shift。 I am grateful that Murata has given me another powerful reminder of what I should know well: you just truly do not know what is going on inside someone’s head, so do not judge。 Let it be。 。。。more

I found this book。。。 so sad? I read Keiko as someone who's on the autism spectrum, or at least neurodivergent to the point where she's unable to read social cues or understand the point of them at all。 The Convenience Store clearly works as a balm, since it provides her with structure and a way to feel like she belongs in a society that makes little sense to her otherwise。 The book, though, isn't interested in exploring that。 So, in the end, I don't know what point it is trying to make。 Society I found this book。。。 so sad? Capitalism makes a tool os us all? We're still in the stone age like Shiraha can't stop talking about? I can't help but feel the book ends up being a disservice to people who are also neurodivergent。 Keiko's behavior seemed to me almost too exaggerated at times, almost like a caricature of someone on the spectrum。 I could be wrong, of course, but then there are people calling her quirky and laughing at the way Keiko's sees people and the world, which strikes me as a bit odd too。 I think it's worth having a discussion about this。Credit where credit is deserved, though, the writing is great and makes the book a breeze to read。 I thought Keiko was an amazing character, I just wish the book had done more for her。 。。。more

Two and a half starsThis is a weird book。 Weird that could have gone into that much liked category of weirdly wonderful, and yet it doesn't。 The running theme of societal expectations from a woman rests on the shoulders of an eccentric woman and while the concept isn't hammered, it certainly isn't subtle on account of the discomfort inducing female protagonist and her male counterpart。 The only positive is that it's a quick read Two and a half starsThis is a weird book。 Weird that could have gone into that much liked category of weirdly wonderful, and yet it doesn't。 The running theme of societal expectations from a woman rests on the shoulders of an eccentric woman and while the concept isn't hammered, it certainly isn't subtle on account of the discomfort inducing female protagonist and her male counterpart。 The only positive is that it's a quick read 。。。more

So glad this was only 163 pages。 SMALL pages, large print。 Even those weren't worth the time to read them。 I chugged thru hoping for a grand ending。 DISAPPOINTING from every angle。 A bunch of names but no character development。 Starts with a gal getting a part time job & staying with it for 18 years。 If that's all you need to live, and you're happy doing it, fine。 If you are more concerned with society's thoughts about your life, then get a life!
